place in Philippine Art was secured in the last quarter of the nineteenth century through his large Neoclassical canvases which harvested Gold and Silver Medals in prestigious International
Exhibitions. His paintings portray a delicate sensibility, which a critic has described as "more pure, more serene in feeling."

Luna was a 19th century Filipino master whose works are marked with realism, drama and
action. His most notable masterpiece is the "Spoliarium" which was entered in
1884 at the prestigious Exposicion General de Bellas Artes in Madrid Spain and won him one of the three gold medals.

was part of the avant-garde circle of
artists. His paintings are known for using cubism, which reduces reality into
planes, simplifying forms, or fragmenting them into a myriad of resonant
shapes. In 1981, he was posthumously conferred the Philippine National Artist Award.
